The film is predictable, and a little boring for that reason. Essentially this is just OK, I would not recommend this film to anyone who enjoyed any of Gleeson's previous work.

Enchorde 11 August A very sweet movie for a cosy rainy afternoon or something like that. A widow, Emily, with financial problems meets a man, Donald, living in a shack in Hampstead, in the middle of London.

Donald does things his own way, living outside society but in harmony with himself and his surroundings. Emily, however, is in harmony with absolutely nothing.

Of course they meet and mutual interest arises between them. A sweet movie about harmony in life, and that it is never too late to find love or your own place in life.

Keaton and Gleeson play the main character with finesse, and carries this story. It is so much more about the characters since there is no real drama or danger in the plot.

Hence, a good feelgood movie. This is a poor mans' Lady In The Van, i. Three days work in March, luvvie, right you are, another nice little earner, that's the new Aga sorted.

That you, Tarquin? Can you give us a couple of days next month? Well done, you. Never mind I'll give Roderick a bell.

Break a leg. And thus you wind up with the likes of Lesley Manville, Jason Watkins and James Norton, who should have been insulted to be asked to phone in something Samuel West turned his nose up at.

Okay, luvvies, this is the thing; we're bringing Diane Keaton in for the marquee, you're precious Primrose Hill types, you can do it in your sleep and there's a new kitchen in it.

Luckily for the producers Camilla Long filed her last review for the Sunday times a week ago and is off to have a baby, otherwise This film, stated to be based on the true story of the 'Hampstead Hermit' Harry Hallowes, tells the tale of a alternative lifestyler who builds himself a 'residence' in an isolated corner of Hampstead Heath, where he lives largely undisturbed for many years.

Brendon Gleeson is brilliant as the irascible hermit, complete with quirky observations on life and the modern world.

Widowed American Emily spies him when looking out her attic window with binoculars, and invests reasons to meet him, and the rom com dimension stems from that.

I'm not quite so sure about Diane Keeton's success in her role, but her gentle reserve mostly rings true, as do the fragile relationships with her conflicted 'friends'.

Most of the smaller parts are forgettable one dimensional caricatures of various typical British types. The film looks and feels the part, as I'm sure those who have had the pleasure of spending some time on Hampstead Heath will agree.

Some aspects of the plot have some substance, some have that odd ring where truth seems stranger than fiction, but overall it's a bit predictable and lightweight.

It's a pleasant, gentle and undemanding film that probably justifies a couple of hours of your time. I really enjoyed the movie. It was a cute film about simple things that matter, about people, about society.

Two oldies but goldies ; Having a roof above your head is important but the interrelationship between people is more important.

Superficially this film looks like a cross between 'Notting Hill' for older people and 'The Lady in the Van'.

Below the surface, however, it is surprisingly substantial and even has some political implications. I'd been expecting to like it simply for its local colour, which indeed is quite plentiful.

The film has been accused of making Hampstead look permanently sunny. In fact, when Emily Walters Diane Keaton first appears there is heavy rain outside.

Admittedly the weather brightens by the time she befriends Donald Horner Brendan Gleeson. These, then, may be examples of the pathetic fallacy, or may not.

Emily first sees Donald, symbolically, from a distance while surveying the local area with binoculars. The relationship between them develops in a fairly complex way.

This is dramatically satisfying, and so is the underlying tension between Emily and Fiona Lesley Manville , hypocritical cheerleader of Emily's fellow residents.

When Emily eventually loses patience with her, she reveals a steely side beneath her previous passivity. In siding with Donald against the odious snobs in her block of flats, she certainly isn't passive.

They are both outsiders: she as an American widow faced with finding a smaller home, he with his shack on the Heath.

Though severely stigmatised by the local snobs, he is quite harmless. As he says, "I've always gone out of my way to keep out of the way. He scores a surprising victory in the end, though, in fighting for his home — like the late Harry Hallowes, the 'hermit' of Hampstead Heath on whom he is modelled.

Some critics seem to have thought the role of Donald unworthy of Brendan Gleeson. The actor, however, clearly respected his role and took it seriously.

He "liked the idea that in a 'fairy tale love story' there was still room to consider vital issues over ownership of land, house prices and whether it is possible to live outside what society considers 'normal' today.

Sadly, James Norton's role as Emily's son Philip isn't so worthy of him. Philip seems to serve no real purpose, except for disapproving of his mother's plans.

He plays a slightly comic role in one brief scene, when Donald suddenly appears before him and Emily just after having a bath. This, however, looks suspiciously similar to Spike's Rhys Ifans shock appearance before the paparazzi in 'Notting Hill'.

It's too easy to sneer at 'Hampstead'. One reviewer calls it a "ghastly faux-mance" and remarks that the musical score "sounds like it was ripped from a feature-length insurance ad.

It's sort of ok. It tries to be a kind of Notting Hill RomCom but without the twists and funnies. There are stereotypes all over the place and a predictable plot and it drags a bit, particularly near the beginning.

But it's an easy watch, mainly thanks to the two stars, but it would have been so much better with a better script.

Admittedly it was based on true-life events but someone should tell the scriptwriter that true does not always equal interesting. That lazy evening, when you just wanna cozy up, and share some giggles, this will do.

A decent story, with a good cast. Emily Diane Keaton has adjusted to being widowed a year ago in all respects other than financially.

She is trying to keep her poor finances a secret from the other residents of the upmarket apartment house she lives in when she encounters Donald Brendan Gleeson , known locally as The Tramp, who lives in a shack built from scrap in thr grounds of a long-demolished hospital.

Donald happily keeps himself to himself and makes to demands on anyone, but the owners of the site have served an eviction notice on him so that they can redevelop the site.

Donald's instinctive reaction is aggressive bluster, because he doesn't know what else to do. Which doesn't go down well in her social circle. Hampstead is an affluent, upper-middle class area of north London which is mildly snobbish and, paradoxically, under the impression that it isn't, and this underlies the humour in this fanciful geriatric romance, based on a real-life case of someone who had made his home on a forgotten, but ultimately valuable, plot of land.

Hampstead is photographed very prettily. Diane Keaton has a little more substance than in her last couple of outings, and Brendan Gleeson does comedy as well as he ever has: he doesn't get too much opportunity for comedy usually, which is a shame.

Jason Watkins, as usual, steals every scene he is in. Real life, I suspect, had little in the way of romance accompanying the legal issues whereas the fate of the two ill-matched lovers is the raisin d'etre for the movie.

And that's fine. The resolution is a bit too glib but, otherwise, this is very gentle and likeable. Greetings again from the darkness.

Were this not inspired by the true story of Harry Hallowes, finding something positive to say about the film might prove difficult. Hallowes was sometimes affectionately known as the "Hampstead Hermit".

The crux of his story is that he was awarded legal "squatter's rights" for his many years living in a small shack on the vast land where the Athlone House now foreign owned sits.

Diane Keaton stars as Emily Walters, widowed for more than a year by a man who left her in debt and with the added bonus of discovering he had been having an affair with a younger woman.

The superficial friends in the neighbourhood are rather thought provoking, as they appear so perfect from the outside but they are way less than perfect on the inside.

Indeed they seem to be selfish and have little compassion for each other. The final courtroom scene is unexpectedly touching, as the stranger makes a moving confession.

It is an enjoyable, and certainly unconventional romantic film. Looking for something to watch? Choose an adventure below and discover your next favorite movie or TV show.

The various organisations that protect the interests of the heath and its surrounding area are in the dark. The solicitor who originally acted for Hallowes was unable to shed any light.

In interviews, Hallowes mentioned that he had a half-brother but also said that he was an only child. There have been reports that two unnamed charities are likely to benefit.

Whether they would retain the land or be allowed to sell it on is debatable. Hallowes was able to squat for so many years near Athlone House, used as the headquarters of RAF intelligence training during the second world war, because it was owned by the NHS, which took little interest in its grounds.

The story of Athlone is itself worthy of a film.

Hallowes was able to squat for so many years near Athlone House, used as the headquarters of RAF intelligence training during the second world war, because it was owned by the NHS, which took little interest in its grounds.

The story of Athlone is itself worthy of a film. Shortly after the millennium it was sold to a development company which, after consulting local conservation groups, gave almost two acres of the grounds, including the strip on which Hallowes lived, to the City of London corporation.

The proposal to knock the house down and replace it with a palace complete with a basement car park outraged conservationists who mounted a fierce campaign and succeeded in having the plans turned down.

I never wanted anything to do with it. While the Hallowes-inspired character in the film is painted as a romantic dreamer, Hallowes himself was a complex, contradictory character.
